Big at the Boxcar Office: Once Upon a Train in the West

The world is full of beautiful train layouts, and it's impossible to see them all in person. That's why I've decided to find some of the best layout videos the world wide web has to offer and give them the "box office" treatment. So get your tickets, because we're headed to the movies for the first-ever edition of Big at the Boxcar Office.

Today's video features a truly magnificent train layout set in the old west, and I couldn't think of a better movie title to honor it than Once Upon a Time in the West. So I'd like to introduce you to a one-of-a-kind fine scale layout that's sure to drop some jaws and inspire at least a few railroaders.

Once Upon a Train in the West

The landscaping effects in that layout are almost unbelievable. It's not hard to imagine riding a horse right alongside its rails and looking up into the big western sky. Every single detail has been accounted for, and it really shows in the final result. Even after numerous viewings, this is a video that keep providing more fun things to spot in the both the backgrounds and foregrounds. The bridgework is uncanny, the trees are stunning, and the train itself is a masterpiece too.

Most of us could only dream about a personal layout like this one, but that doesn't make our own efforts any less admirable. If you'd like to show off your own layout in action, you should take the time to fill in your Collection Showcase. And if you have a favorite model train video you'd like to see featured in the next edition of Big at the Boxcar Office, please leave a link in the comments below.

"Train Lady" To Open Magical Garden Railroad For a Single Day

The renowned "Train Lady" Elaine Silets has decided to open her one-of-a-kind garden layout to the general public for a single day on June 29th in order to support the Harvey M. Silets Memorial Scholarship Fund. This is something model train enthusiasts won't want to miss.

If you're unfamiliar with the "Train Lady" (pictured above), Elaine Silets is the mastermind behind Huff and Puff Industries, Ltd, a company that specializes in custom-built railroading layouts, furniture, and anything else your mind can conjure. She is an extensive and talented railroader herself, with an almost-unbelievable garden layout that has to be seen to be believed. Unfortunately her garden railroad is a private one that only opens to the public for special events.

Thankfully the iconic railroader will be opening her garden paradise on June 29th, 2013 from 10am to 4pm as a part of the Huff & Puff Industries' Garden Walk and Model Railroad Display for the benefit of The Harvey M. Silets Memorial Scholarship Fund. If you're in the Chicago area and want to see a once-in-a-lifetime layout, this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

The Train Lady's grounds include a number of specific sites to enjoy including the Glorée & Tryumfant Garden Railway, which covers more than 6,000 square in glorious G-scale detail. The Shabui Garden Railway also decorates the grounds with a lush Japanese-themed rail, and one can't forget about the The Harvey M. Silets Memorial O-Scale Model Railroad Museum that recreates a bustling Chicago rail system down to the tiniest gorgeous detail.

There's little doubt this day will be a dream come true for many a curious railroader. You can find more information and register for the event here.

Lionel Spotlights Santa Fe Scout Set

Not every set in your collection has to be a new centerpiece, and sometimes a nice and easy ready-to-run set can be a fun diversion from the more advanced collecting habits of experienced railroaders. Lionel's latest product spotlight offers that exact opportunity.

Fans of the southwest and its colorful railroads will find something to love about Lionel's newest product offerings. The Santa Fe Scout Set might not turn any heads, but it's a wonderful introductory set to get a new railroader on the tracks or have some fun without breaking the bank. You can read all about the new set and remote below, and then take a look at the pretty pictures (click for full size images).

New Product Spotlight – Santa Fe Scout Set with LionChief Remote

With the distinctive “Blat” of its single-chime horn and burbling throb of its Alco diesel, a Santa Fe RS-3 rolls into town with the local freight ready to go to work. From siding to siding, the train is busy picking up and setting out cars, serving the Santa Fe’s customers with prompt and friendly service.

Just like that local is the starting point for many freight cars’ journeys, the new Santa Fe Scout Set can be the beginning of your railroad adventure. With everything you need to get started in our easy-to-assemble, easy-to-control ready to run set, the Santa Fe Scout is packed with value.

Equipped with our new LionChief Remote Control system, the Santa Fe RS-3 and set are ready to go right out of the box. Just snap together the FasTrack oval, plug in the power supply, put the train on the track and go. The locomotive comes to life with realistic sounds and smooth performance. The engine includes:

  • Walk-around radio control with the LionChief Remote
  • RailSounds RC with diesel revving, horn, bell and user activated crew dialog
  • On/Off switch for sound
  • Operating headlights
  • Lighted interior
  • Maintenance Free Motor
  • Operating couplers

The LionChief Remote is the most user-friendly control system Lionel has ever created. Easy enough for young engineers to learn and love, the whole family can have fun playing with this set together.

Trailing behind the locomotive are a gondola with a pair of removable containers, boxcar with opening doors and a caboose – perfect for a busy local freight that can be loaded and unloaded with many products. And as your business grows, the set is easy to expand with additional FasTrack, cars and accessories.

See your dealer to order one today. The fun starts with a list price of just $ 199.99. The set should be shipping shortly.

This set might not appeal to the most hardcore enthusiasts out there, but its wild variety of gorgeous colors and car types will certainly grab the attention of many new railroaders. This an eye-catching set with an eye-catching introductory pricetag, and that alone will be enough to win over a number of folks. This set is simple, convenient, and fun, making it a welcome variation from the world of high-end items that consume many collections.

If you think this fun set is perfect for you, keep an eye out for it and other Lionel products on the DASH Marketplace.

Big at the Boxcar Office: Train of the Valley of the Wind

You've never seen anything like this Japansese model train layout, and its video clearly deserves the "box office" treatment. So get your tickets and sit down for another edition of Big at the Boxcar Office.

If you're ever in Japan, I know one thing you absolutely can't miss. The Railway Museum Saitama features an unbelievable layout that could easily be mistaken for reality by untrained eyes. Much like the classic Japanese film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, this train collection almost seems to float along. You absolutely have to see this professional one-of-a-kind layout.

Train of the Valley of the Wind

Japan's trains are known for their unmatched precision and professionalism, and that fact couldn't have been better-reflected in this layout. It's pristine in every way and features enough details to spend hours looking into its various tracks, mountains, bridges, and buildings. It even has a functional day and night cycle! This is one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing layouts I've ever seen.

This kind of layout is beyond most of us, but that doesn't make our own efforts any less admirable. We'd love to see your layout in action next time around, so please take a moment to fill in your Collection Showcase and show it off! If you have a favorite model train video that deserves to go Big at the Boxcar Office, please leave a link in the comments below.

Lionel Debuts Battle Train Mobile Game Trailer

Lionel just released a trailer for its upcoming iPad game, Battle Train. It looks like you'll finally have another train-related app to install alongside your  DASH Trains mobile app!

Even if you've never played a game on your iPad before, it looks like Battle Train might be of interest to you. It aims to take the hobby we love, spins up a creative narrative, and throws it all together in an action-packed and visually-appealing way. Just take a look at the exciting new trailer below and see if your interest is piqued.

It might not capture the reality of model trains, but it certainly brings trains to life in an exciting way. The graphics are colorful and fun, the gameplay seems exciting and dynamic, and the visual design and audio look and sound excellent. Some might consider this kind of game "goofy", but I think it's a smart move by Lionel to engage their audience and allow collectors to introduce the brand and the hobby to a younger generation of their family.

Lionel isn't getting specific on a release date, but cites "summer" for the app's availability. I'll do my best to bring you a more detailed look when it's officially released, but I don't see how it could top the wonderful DASH app with a Club membership.

DASH Celebrates the 4th of July

On July 4th, the great heritage and independence of the United States of America is celebrated across the country and even the world. Railroaders recognize the significance of the train in America's grand history, and here at DASH we wanted to honor the train's importance in both maintaining our independence and as a symbol for the prosperity of this great land.

That's why I decided to create the following representation of the American flag using the model trains that we all know and love. By utilizing the wonders of technology, I was able to piece together more than 100 different trains to create a mosaic image that captures the patriotic side of our hobby.

It might just look like a blob of trains to the untrained eye, but it's actually a complete flag with the correct number of red-and-white stripes, as well as 50 unique white spots over a field of blue trains to represent the 50 stars. We think this is the ultimate model train flag and DASH is honored to share it with the world.

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July holiday, and I hope you'll take a moment to pass along the patriotism by sharing our flag with your friends, family, and fellow railroaders.

Big at the Boxcar Office: Train Holiday

Model railroading is truly an international hobby, and despite the incredible layouts American railroaders are assembling, some of the world's best layouts happen to come from overseas. One such layout is featured here today, earning its spot at the "box office" with some wonderful foreign scenery.

This German layout video will leave you in awe for the entire 30-minute tour. Much like the classic film Roman Holiday takes you on a trip through a foreign land, this layout will have you wishing you could visit an amazing faraway country full of incredible trains.

Train Holiday

Don't you just love the meticulous details, unusual trains, and stunning landscape in this layout? It feels so alive and simultaneously majestic, making it a beauty to behold from start to finish!

This might seem like the ultimate layout video, but we're always on the lookout for more cool videos. If you want to share your own layout, please drop it into your Collection Showcase page. Even if it isn't as magnificent as this one, we'll definitely still adore it. You should also drop a link to your favorite layout online, because it might show up right here in next edition of Big at the Boxcar Office!

DASH and Trainz Present Donation to Annandale Village

DASH recently teamed up with the seller Trainz to help support a charity that is near and dear to both our organizations. Annandale Village is now home to our favorite Trainz railroader, Mitch Griggs, and we were honored to recently present our donation to support Mitch and the entire Annandale organization.

Below you'll see a picture of Trainz Chief Engineer Scott Griggs handing over our contribution check right alongside his family Mitch and Milinda. This great scene was made possible because of the support of the DASH and Trainz communities, so our thanks and heartfelt appreciation goes out to you!

Scott and his family certainly appreciate your support as well. Here's a message from Scott himself.

"I appreciate the generosity of the DASH team in putting this offer together. Annandale Village is going to be fantastic for Mitch, and I hope anyone that upgrades will enjoy the benefits of DASH for years to come."

The DASH members that make up our community are truly a wonderful part of the railroading hobby, and we hope to provide you with more opportunities to shine!

A Night at the TTOS & LOTS Welcome Party

The TTOS & LOTS Rendevous in Reno kicked off with a bang last night at the official Welcome Party, where hundreds of railroaders gathered to launch the event in style alongside a plethora of beautiful cars at the The National Automobile Museum.

We were able to join the party, and wanted to bring you a closer look at all the wonderful happenings if you couldn't be there. It was loads of fun to sit and talk trains while basking in the glow of some of the world's finest automobiles. There were plenty of incredible cars to see, but the real fun started with the actual proceedings. One of our favorite moments was TTOS Convention Manager J Keeley presenting a recognition award to Paula Smith, LOTS Business Manager and Event Coordinator for the evening's event. Look at the splendid moment below.

To anyone who attended the Welcome Party, it was clear how much work went into it, so it was nice to see Paula Smith recognized for her efforts. She was even able to address the crowd with a few inspiring words of her own.

And what a crowd there was! The room was packed with devoted railroaders from both the Lionel Operating Train Society and the Toy Train Operating Society, a great indication of the popularity and significance of this annual event. They enjoyed a tasty "Ferrari" dinner, were able to participate in a treasure-filled silent auction, and clearly enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow club members. We managed to capture a few photos of the bustling crowd.

The people, their stories, and the activities made this event an absolute pleasure, but the backdrop certainly didn't hurt. The National Automobile Museum was a wonderful setting that provided a few great sights and sounds of its own. They might not be model trains, but some of the cars are still worth a look.

Who could pass up getting behind the wheel of any of those fine vehicles? It might be a distant dream for most of us, but I'd even take a few for a layout as well! It's not hard to see that a trip to the National Automobile Museum is well worth it, but it's nothing compared to the fantastic events planned throughout the rest of the LOTS & TTOS 2013 Annual Convention. The next two days are action-packed, and promise to continue the fun that the Welcome Party started.

Lionel Collectors Club of America's 43rd Annual Convention Begins

This week Lionel Collectors Collectors Club of America members from all over the country will be flooding the train-filled city of Chattanooga Tennessee for the action-packed 43rd annual convention.

From the "Chattanooga Choo Choo" to the train-themed hotel hosting the convention, this is the perfect place for railroaders to gather and celebrate the long and incredible history of the Lionel Collectors Club of America. The event is set to include some memorable moments like local train tours, famous layouts, and loads of interactions with fellow club members and train lovers. You can find more information on the show below.

LCCA 2013 Annual Convention Links

You should also take a moment to read the following convention summary from the fine folks at Lionel.
If you have a camera and want to take some memorable shots, then be sure to attend this year's 43rd annual LCCA Convention in Chattanooga, TN, during July 14-20, 2013. Chattanooga in July will be picturesque, and the tours will be visually spectacular. There will be something for everyone this year – excursions aboard several trains from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRRM), trips to historic Civil War battlefields, a famous model train layout, and many local points of interest.

The convention is kicking off in earnest later this week, but the fun has already started. To me, the can't-miss highlights include the trip to the Misty Mountain Model Railroad and Toy Train Museum, the incline rail ride to the top of Lookout Mountain, and the various informational seminars and hobby clinics. It just doesn't get any better than this if you're a Lionel collector.

If you can make your way to Chattanooga, it'll definitely be worth the trip. Annual conventions don't get much bigger nor better organized, and this one promises tons of fun for railroaders of all ages.

NMRA 2013 Convention Launches in Atlanta

The city of Atlanta (and home of DASH) welcomed the National Model Railroad Association's 2013 Annual Convention this week, and things are on track for an incredible show.

Atlanta is a city with a rich railroading history, and as the home base of DASH, we couldn't be more excited to have the NMRA 2013 convention in town this week. Thanks to the organization of the Piedmont Division, there are some amazing activities and events planned for all the NMRA members in town, and any self-respecting railroader in the area would be silly to miss out on at least some of the fun. If you're playing catch up with the Peachtree Express NMRA 2013 National Convention, check out the helpful links and summary below.

NMRA National Convention 2013 Links

The NMRA has also summarized the convention quite nicely in the following text.

Atlanta's Piedmont Division is proud to host the 2013 NMRA National Convention. Located in Northwest Atlanta, the Cobb Galleria Centre is a beautiful facility to house the convention and the National Train Show. Layout tours will provide access to more than 60 layouts already showing on the annual Piedmont Pilgrimage open house event in each November. Other impressive layouts from around the Southeastern Region will also be on tour.

The convention has already successfully launched, but really starts getting fun as the week progresses. There are some incredible tours of local rail highlights and spectacular area layouts planned. Visitors will be able to attend a number of clinics and programs to further their skills and interest in the hobby. And the local sightseeing couldn't get much better. It's difficult to imagine a convention that's more organized and more entertaining than this one.

Finding your way to Atlanta this week is certainly worth the trouble, and you might even be able to say "hello" to a DASH team member or two while you're here. The NMRA 2013 Nation Convention is sure to please all its attendees and loyal railroaders.

Big at the Boxcar Office: The Trainfather

Some layouts aren't technically perfect or especially realistic, but they have a personality and grittiness that makes them memorable in their own right. This video captures one such layout and deserves the "box office" treatment, so grab your tickets and get ready for another edition of Big at the Boxcar Office.

Some layouts catch your imagination and curiosity because of their personality or often because of the railroaders behind them. In the video featured below, "Collins City" and its operator Carl Dorsch each have a gritty, quiet, and unmistakable sense of story about them. The sights, the sounds, and the sense of awe you'll get from this layout might just remind you of The Godfather, making this a must-see video.

The Trainfather

It's not likely that anyone will be praising "Collins City" for its strict sense of reality or its big sweeping views. But the intimate sense of "city" and the thousands of minute details are sure to be appreciated by any real railroader. It's clear that a deft and caring hand placed each element, and when taken altogether, it comes to life like so few layouts truly do.

If you have your own personality-filled layout, we'd love to see it featured on your Collection Showcase. We're not the only ones hoping you decide to show it off! And if you've got a favorite model train video that you'd like to see go Big at the Boxcar Office, please leave a link to it in the comments below.

Lionel Spotlights Zephyr Lineup

Some trains have an undefinable majesty about them, and the silver streaked subject of Lionel's latest spotlight is one such beauty.

If you aren't familiar with the "Pioneer Zephy", then it's time to meet one of the world's most gorgeous trains as envisioned by Lionel. Not only did they capture the classic "Silver Streak", but they added unique Lionel and Christmas color variations for a wonderful lineup of Zephyrs unlike any we've ever seen. Read all the product details straight from Lionel below.

New Product Spotlight – Zephyrs

As the nation struggled to climb out of the Great Depression, thousands gathered along the tracks from the Midwest to the East Coast to see a brilliant silver flash of the future. More than just a train, the Pioneer Zephyr promised a brighter future and exciting changes to come.

The Pioneer Zephyr

Officially introduced at the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broad Street Station in Philadelphia (also the Budd Company’s home town) on April 18, 1934, the Zephyr began a long introduction to the world before entering regular service on the Burlington. The introduction was advertising not only for the CB&Q but for Budd as well, hoping to sell the new technology and service to railroads and passengers around the country.

On August 24, the Burlington arranged a special showing for the Zephyr. It would race from Denver to Chicago at record pace. Carrying dignitaries, employees and the train’s mascot burro “Zeph,” the train left Denver at 7:04 in the morning. The “Dawn to Dusk Dash” ended in Chicago just 13 hours and 5 minutes later at 8:09 PM. Achieving a top speed of 112 mph and averaging 77 mph, the train arrived nearly two hours earlier than expected.

This run of the “Silver Streak” made national headlines and even prompted a movie about its amazing journey. But the tour didn’t end in Chicago. The Zephyr would go on to visit the Century of Progress Fair in Chicago and then 222 cities in 31 states.

As the Zephyr’s fame and success grew, it became part of the popular culture.
The train finally entered regular service on the Burlington between Kansas City, Missouri and Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska in November of 1934. With seating capacity of only 72 people plus baggage and mail space, the railroad would at times add a fourth car to the consist.

Aside from its limited capacity and a serious head-on collision in 1939, the train performed better than expectations. It was renamed the “Pioneer Zephyr” in 1936 as the Burlington bought additional train sets and added many “conventional” trains with the Zephyr name.

The landmark train reached its first million miles of service with its first five years. It stayed on the roster until 1960 when it was donated to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry where it remains a major exhibit today.

Lionel’s Zephyr

Now you can add this momentous train to your layout. Lionel’s latest release of this historic streamliner comes complete with LEGACY control and sound and all of the features you’ve come to expect.

  • LEGACY Control – also capable of running on TMCC or Conventional

  • LEGACY RailSounds including

  • 8 Diesel RPM levels
  • LEGACY Quilling horn
  • Single hit or continuous mechanical bell

  • Working Marker Lights on locomotive and observation car

  • Metal frames
  • Die-cast metal bodies, trucks and vestibules
  • O-54 minimum curve

In addition to the Burlington Pioneer and Mark Twain Zephyr, we are also offering the train in some very non-conventional but seriously cool color schemes. The “Lionel Lines” and North Pole Central “Christmas Zephyr” are sure to be a hit on many layouts. Each 3-car set is priced at $ 1099.99. See your dealers to order, these trains are expected to arrive this fall. Don’t miss this historic train as it blows by!

It's hard to beat the classic Zephyr, but the "Lionel Lines" version with the simple blue line is a nice looking train as well. I'm not entirely sold on the Christmas colors, but I can imagine many happy railroaders finding that train sitting under their tree this year. This is an iconic, historically significant, and absolutely stunning vehicle, and it's going to be hard to pass up for any dedicated Lionel collector.

Keep an eye out for this beautiful "silver streak" making its way onto the DASH Marketplace, along with other great Lionel products from the past and present.

Big at the Boxcar Office: It's a Wonderful Train

Some model train layouts leave you absolutely speechless. The famed layout featured in today's video will do exactly that, and undoubtledly requires the "box office" treatment, so pick your seat and settle in for another edition of Big at the Boxcar Office.

The Northlandz layout of Pennsylvania is a legend in the model train community. If you haven't been to see it, stop everything you're doing and plan a visit. If you can't hit the road right now, then sit back and enjoy the video of Northlandz below. Much like the wonderful tale of a man living his life and finding his way that we all know and love as the film It's a Wonderful Life, this layout tells the story of a man's life and his love for trains.

It's a Wonderful Train

Bruce Zaccagnino spent much of his life creating the remarkable feat of engineering and passion that is Northlandz. And the results speak for themselves. The track stretches for miles, the lanscape climbs for ages, and the sights and sounds are completely magical. Watching the tiny trains zip and whir along the beautiful scenery of Northlandz will bring joy to anyone's day.

I think there are lots of angels getting their wings with all the bells ringing in this layout. "We make everybody that comes through here pretty happy," Bruce revealed in the video. "And if they're happy, then I'm happy." That certainly sounds like a wonderful life and a wonderful railroader to me.

If you have a wonderful layout of your own, we'd love to see it make a stop on your Collection Showcase. There are many other DASH users hoping you decide to show it off too! If you've got a favorite model train video from somewhere online, and you'd like to see it featured on the next edition of Big at the Boxcar Office, please leave a link to it in the comments below.

Railway Robbery: Brass and Paint

Collecting trains is an expensive hobby, and most railroaders are willing to lay down a pretty penny for the perfect piece. But some collectibles in the world of trains are exorbitant beyond imagination, and look more like "Railway Robbery" than a good purchase.

That's why I found five of the most excessive train themed items available on eBay right now. These trains might not necessarily be overpriced, but they're certainly more expensive than the average railroader would be willing to pay. Welcome to the first-ever edition of Railway Robbery.

5. THE PINE TREE EXPRESS 6" SCALE TRAIN AND ACCESSORIES

Price: $ 500,000

See more of this train

Most of us aren't willing to spend half a million dollars to improve our layout, but this is a real life train, so it might just be worth it. The seller explains that "the entire project took over 27 years with the help and support of family and friends," making this a family memento as well as an unbelievably cool train. I'd say that's worth hundreds of thousands, but I won't be getting my checkbook out today.

4. MAGNIFICENT WORK,VINTAGE HUGE DETAIL BRASS DIESEL ALCO TRAIN SET,NON BETTER,1/1

Price: $ 55,750

See more of this train

This is a really neat "scratch-built" brass train, but even a beautiful brass beast doesn't deserve a $ 55,000 price tag. At least the seller knows the average railroader isn't his target. He says, "I am looking for high end collectors like Tom Brokaw, Tom Hanks, Neil Young, and high end train collectors that have the funds and to preserve such a set, and want nothing but the best." Tom Hanks, if you're out there reading, here's your chance!

3. Lionel Standard Gauge No. 408E Two Tone Brown State Set!!!

Price: $ 47,500

See more of this train

This is an absolutely stunning holy grail set, but it's still overpriced for almost $ 50,000. There isn't a collector alive who wouldn't welcome this train into their collection. There also might not be a collector alive that would pay so much for it.

2. SCRATCHBUILT BRASS WM CLASS M-2 4-6-6-4 CHALLENGER

Price: $ 25,000

See more of this train

This train is so ridiculously priced for a specific reason! "Just to set the record straight, I am really looking for information only here," the seller says. "And not looking to sell this piece." It's certainly a gorgeous train, but he's absolutely right that $ 25,000 is an outrageous price.

1. HO TRAIN SET SUPER LARGE 72" x 104" INCHES OIL ON CANVAS JOHN KILDUFF

Price: $ 100,000

See more of this painting

John Kilduff is a moderately famous painter and actually quite talented, but this painting looks terrible. It's sloppy, the perspective is off, and the trains lack any detail. I might be missing some artistic element, but I can't imagine any self-respecting railroader spending $ 100,000 on this painting to adorn their railroad room walls.

These five exorbitant collectibles might not be selling anytime soon, but they sure are fun to look at. Anyone who decides to buy one of these excessive pieces might just be a victim of Railway Robbery! If you don't want to get robbed, be sure to check out the DASH Marketplace for more reasonable trains that will still spruce up your collection.
