Top 5 Lego Train Sets of All time

Most model railroaders aren't interested in the blocky world of Lego sets. But the famed Danish "construction company" has been making great trains for decades, and they're the perfect complement to any devoted model railroading collection. These five sets in particular are the perfect way to diversify your rolling stock with a block or two.

These sets aren't available on store shelves today, but they're the very best that Lego has had to offer the railroading community over the last 35 years. They're fun, different, and highly collectible. These are the best five Lego train sets of all time.

5. Set # 10020-1: Santa Fe Super Chief

This set doesn't have perfect proportions and might be missing a few details, but it's a great way to introduce a realistic locomotive with a strong sense of history into the hands of a child. Instead of a generic train, this one bears a real road name and more than a few stories to go along with it. It was produced in 2002 and retailed for $ 40, and routinely sells for hundreds of dollars in a sealed package these days.

4. Set 10194-1: Emerald Night

This set earns its place on the list because it's absolutely beautiful. The locomotive is slick and stunning. The tender and car complement it wonderfully, and the minifigures are both iconic in their Lego looks and ideal for the train they're aboard. There are countless small details and smooth flowing shapes all across this train. You'd never know it was a Lego set at first glance. Emerald night was released in 2009 at a $ 100 price point, and sell for up to three times that amount today.

3. Set 10173-1: Holiday Train

The Holiday Train set is just fun. It's not particularly realistic or historic in its approach, but the vast amount of play features, fun touches, and included accessories make it the most enjoyable Lego train set ever. Just look at that car filled to the brim with gifts for good boys and girls! It's hard to believe a set this cool was only $ 89.99 when it was released in 2006, but the price has since skyrocketed. Sealed sets can sell for close to $ 1000 on the market today!

2. Set 4708-1: Hogwarts Express

This might not be the best looking train Lego has ever produced, but it's certainly one of the most recognizable to the average person on the street. Hogwarts Express took center stage in the Harry Potter series of films, and this iteration of the train is a great entry-level piece for collectors and kids alike. Unlike other versions of the set, this one includes a detailed recreation of the famed station platform 9 & 3/4, which gives it the extra detail and playfullness to stand out from the rest. It was only $ 50 upon its release in 2001, and now sells for up to four times that numbers when new and sealed.

1. Set 323-1 - Train

You a know a set is important to the history of Lego trains when it's simply called "train". This was the very first train Lego ever produced, and it debuted all the way back in 1964. It might not look like much, but it's left quite a legacy in its wake over the last 50 years. This is a rare set that rarely comes up for sale, but needless to say, it's a priceless part of childhood to many young Lego fans and railroaders.

These five sets are some of the most iconic, beautiful, and important in the history of Lego trains. Whether you're able to track them all down or just head to the store and purchase a new set off the shelf, adding a Lego train to your collection is going to be a lot of fun.
