The Ultimate Model Train Values Guide

Finding an updated and reliable model trains values guide is nearly impossible. There simply isn't a good paper-based handbook for model train prices these days, and that's left a lot of railroaders looking for a consistently updated and accurate authority on model train values.

The Ultimate Model Trains Values Guide
  • Tens of thousands of values
  • Regularly updated by real sales data
  • Goes mobile with iOS and Android app
  • Includes photos, details, UPCs, and more

Whether you're looking to buy a vintage train for a fair price at a local store, or want to sell your own collection piece by piece for its true value, a reliable price guide is a mandatory accessory for modern day railroading.

But if you look around for your accessory of choice, you'll quickly realize there simply isn't a comprehensive and reliable handbook for train values. You certainly can't flip through a dusty old book expecting to find a trustworthy price in the current market.

Even the paper price guides that get printed these days suffer from an unbearably long turnaround between price assessment and publication, meaning they miss out out on the latest trends and variations in the volatile world of model train values.

You might be one of the many collectors who rely on closed sales on sites like ebay to indvidually determine specific model train values. But that takes lots of work and loads of calculation each and every time you need a number. And it's a process which is practically impossible to replicate on the road or on the trading floor of a show, leaving you without an answer in your biggest time of need.

So a lot of collectors think there just isn't an ideal solution. But here you are, reading an article on Collector-ModelTrains.com, which just so happens to be the home of the world's single biggest model train price guide! It's regularly updated, covers tens of thousands of trains, and can be carried in your pocket thanks to the DASH Model Trains app. It solves all your problems in a convenient and efficient package without any of the headaches.

The DASH price guide works with an online system that's easy to navigate by scale or simply search by name. Once you've found a train's listing, the values and associated information will be included, along with any photos or descriptions other users have contributed. It's a simple, easy, and absurdly convenient modern day equivalent of the paper-based values guide.

It might sound too good to be true, but seeing is believing. So let's take a look at a sample page from the DASH digital price guide. What could be better for an example than this cool diesel locomotive worth more than $ 450 in the package?

As you can see, all the information you need to buy, sell, or trade the item is present. You can take a look at the photos to make sure it's the right train, and you can even see what other collectors have rated the train before making any important decisions. And if for some reason you feel like the value is incorrect, you can even leave a comment with your value suggestions for our team of experts to investigate.

The best part is, you can access this price guide from any computer in the worldas long as it's connected to the internet. Once you have a Collector-ModelTrains account with an associated price guide, you'll have unlimited access from anywhere. That includes access to the guide on your mobile device thanks to our iOS and Android apps.

If you're looking for the ultimate solution to one of modern day collecting's biggest problems, look no further than the Collector-ModelTrains.com digital price guide. Here's how you can get it.
The Ultimate Model Train Values Guide

If somehow you find you're not happy with the world's absolute best model train price and values guide, then don't worry. We'll refund your purchase within 30 days if you'd rather return to paper. But you and I both know that's no way to collect model trains.

The hobby has gotten too advanced and too modern to rely on outdated methods to track and value your collection. Do yourself and your trains a favor by buying The Ultimate Model Train Price Guide today.

The Ultimate Model Train App

Model train enthusiasts have always collected on the road and on the move. We hunt in stores, we convene at shows, and we think about our trains everywhere we go. But until now we've never had the ultimate tool to carry our collection in our pocket.

The Ultimate Model Train App

  • Access the entire 91,000-item catalog
  • Add and remove trains from your collection
  • View values, photos, and info anywhere
  • Find figures with the barcode scanner

Whether you want to check on a train's value from a convention show floor, or just want to add your latest purchase to your digital collection on DASH right from a local shop, the Collector-ModelTrains mobile app for Android or iOS is perfect for you.

It frees you from the burden of paper checklists and bulky price guides by taking more than 90,000 trains and accessories and putting them right into your pocket. You can unlock all the app's amazing features by becoming a DASH Club member.

But it's pretty hard to envision just how awesome the app is without actually seeing it in action. That's why I've taken screenshots from my Android phone and included them in a walkthrough of its various features below. But before I get into all the goodies, watch this video of the app in action.

Once you open the app, you're greated with a helpful home screen. From the main screen you can access your collection of trains, search for trains in the catalog, scan a barcode (Android only), access your wanted list, or even find articles from right here on DASH Flash. I think the coolest feature is being able to view and manage your digital DASH collection right from the phone. You can see a list of all your trains separated into their respective scales or categories, from which you can then go to any single train's detailed listing from the DASH Catalog.

That means hundreds of thousands of photos and more than 91,000 trains' information is right at your fingertips, no matter where you are. I've often checked out a car's listing while at my local train shop to see its true value. You can sniff out bad deals instantly or identify the steal of a lifetime at a garage sale with ease. And the best part is, no one even knows that's what you're doing, because they assume you're just sending a text or checking emails.

Even if you aren't shopping, I think the app is a great distraction for the boring moments in life. Any time you have 5 minutes to kill, popping out the app and browsing through model train photos is a great way to enjoy collecting in your downtime. If you're like me, you enjoy model train photos no matter the time or place, not just from the comfort of your layout. And as an expert in the field, I need to spend the time familiarizing myself with various obscure scales and rolling stock (unlike that SD70ACe over there, which we all know and love).

Being able to zoom and pan around the high quality photos is a great feature for detail-nuts like myself. How could I ever learn about every single train that ever existed without having them at arm's length 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

But the fun doesn't actually end there. One of the most useful features ever devised for a railroader is the built-in barcode scanner in the Anroid app. Thanks to DASH's extensive record of UPC codes for trains, you can pull up many listings using nothing more than a barcode and your phone.

If a new load of trains just arrived in the mail, scan them each up, take a photo, and add them to your digital DASH collection right from the phone. Then just sit back and relax with the knowledge that your collection is nice and organized before you even get them open.

The DASH mobile app takes the incredible online experience of our collection management software and makes it more convenient and accesible for collectors on the move. Never has it been more fun nor more easy to accomplish so many collecting tasks right from your phone.

You probably didn't even realize what you were missing with the DASH mobile app, but as soon as you start using it regularly, it'll become your new best friend. I'd certainly hate to return to life as a model train enthusiast without it.

Big at the Boxcar Office: Once Upon a Train in America

Not all model train layouts are designed to look pristine and perfect in every way. This gritty little layout captures the reality of the American rail system, and definitely deserves the "box office" treatment, so get your ticket punched and get ready another edition of Big at the Boxcar Office.

Sometimes a little grit, grime, and realism is the real way to a railroader's heart. If you're a modeler who likes to see the dirt, rust, and reality of the modern day railroad, then you'll love this layout. It brings the bumpy ride and uneven tracks to the layout table with a marvelous final result. You might be reminded of the grit and dark reality of a film like Once Upon a Time in America, and you're sure to enjoy this movie just as much.

Once Upon a Train in America

I love how much this layout resembles the reality of a railyard. The tracks wrinkle and buckle much like the tried-and-true rails seen all across the country, the trains ache and groan over the rails, and there's a layer of dusty life covering every aspect of the scene. Watching this video feels like strolling over to the closest tracks and taking a gander, which is often hard to accomplish at a smaller scale like N. I'm just in love with this setup.

If you have a great and gritty layout of your own, we'd love to see it on your Collection Showcase. And for those of you with a favorite model train video from the world wide web, please leave a link in the comments below and it could be featured on the next edition of Big at the Boxcar Office

The Best Way to Sell Your Model Train Collection

There comes a time when every model train collection has to change hands, and whether you're looking to liquidate your own beloved trains or those of a lost loved one, it can be difficult to figure out the best course of action. That's why DASH is here to help.

There are a lot of obstacles to selling a model train collection. You have to identify exactly what you have, you have to determine its value, and you have to decide the best method and place for selling it. DASH allows you to do all of those things in just a few conventient steps.

Step 1. Manage your collection on DASH

Use our extensive Catalog to find and identify the trains in your collection. Our photos and thorough descriptions make it easy, and you can add any trains that are missing yourself using our big simple buttons. Once your items are all added to the My Collection section, you'll have a way to show people "this is exactly what I have for sale" on your Collection Showcase.

Step 2. Send us an email request to sell your collection

After you've managed your collection, DASH will take over. We'll make sure you properly marked trains as boxed or loose and accurately desribed their condition when adding them to your collection. Once everything is in order, we'll give you a value estimate of your collection based on our values and price guide. You can use this in combination with our advice to set the best price for your collection.

Step 3. Let us market your listing and collect your money

After we've agreed on a starting price and the terms for your auction, we'll show your collection to our dedicated base of model train buyers. DASH will get eyeballs on your auction and specifically market your trains to interested parties. Our auction tools can prevent your auction from going cheaper than you'd like, and our 15% buyer's premium will be added to the final price for you to keep. All you pay us is a small 7.95% fee on the total invoice amount.

There might be a few easier ways to sell a model train collection, but none combine the convenience and thoroughness of DASH's Sell My Collection method. We give you the tools to get the most money out of your trains while helping you through the entire process. It doesn't get much better than that.

If you're interested in the best way to sell your model train collection, just click the giant button below.

Let us help you in your time of need, and we'll make sure your selling experience is a positive and rewarding one.

Lionel Highlights Their Customer Service Process

Practically every railroader has a Lionel train in their collection, and the company's impact on the hobby itself can't be overstated. So you might be interested in a closer look at their customer service process, and that's exactly what we've got.

Peek inside the Lionel Customer Service Facility with this wonderful read and some cool photos straight from the folks at Lionel themselves.

Lionel Cares: Customer Service Process

More than 30,000 phone calls. More than 15,000 emails. More than 18,000 parts orders. Every year.

Lionel’s Customer Service Facility is a very busy place. And these numbers don’t even account for the large number of locomotives, starter sets, switches, transformers, remote controls, and other various parts the center receives for repairs.

Even more impressive is the center’s massive inventory with 140,000 different parts numbers listed in their computer database and more than 110,000 various parts in stock at any given time (most of them no older than five years), Lionel’s technicians are able to fix most problems thrown their way in a timely manner.

Providing such a wide assortment of services and keeping track of the extensive inventory is something Phil Hull, Lionel’s Senior Manager of Customer Service, is very familiar with. Hull, who has 18 years of experience in the model train industry, first came to Lionel in 2009 as a sub-contractor and then later as an employee. He was part of a team that faced the daunting task of turning what was a nine-month backlog into a mere two-week turnaround for repairs in just six months. Currently, the backlog stands at only seven days; however, there are exceptions to the two-week processing period, such as if a special part has to be ordered or if there is an issue with the delivery.

Add a relocation that took place during the spring and summer of 2014 to that list of goals and it is obvious that Hull had his work cut out for him. It took approximately two months to move the Customer Service Facility from Canfield, Ohio, to Concord, N.C., where Lionel’s headquarters are located. The new center opened its doors on August 1, 2014.

The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT with Customer Service Representatives available to answer any and all questions, from the simplest to the most technical. The facility’s primary goal is to provide in-warranty repairs for Lionel trains and accessories.

When customers call customer service, they are quickly connected to a Customer Service Representative. The average wait time is three to five minutes, even during the busy season (October through April), which is impressive when you consider how many inquiries they receive daily. All calls are recorded for quality assurance.

“Once we go through the process of determining is it a product failure or operator failure, basically we sit down on the phone with the customer with the train and we go through step-by-step and figure out what’s wrong with it,” Hull said. “Then about four to five percent of callers have to send something in for repair.”

After a Customer Service Representative speaks with the customer and it is determined there is a product failure, the customer is provided a Return Authorization number, used for tracking the item throughout the entire repair process, that must be placed on the outside of the box. The item is then shipped to Lionel’s Customer Service Facility, preferably in its original packaging and foam. Upon receipt, the item in need of repair is logged into the system and an automatic email confirmation is sent to the customer. Repairs are done in order by the date each item was received. When a treasured item is sent in for repairs, the utmost care and service is provided to ensure the repaired piece is returned to its owner safely and in full working condition.

There are three different types of technicians that work on the various items sent in for repair. Each is ready to tackle any challenges thrown at them. These consist of techs specializing in entry-level and ready-to-run sets and accessories, techs trained in steam and diesel repairs, and techs that focus solely on legacy trains and transformers.

Before a repaired piece is sent back to the customer, it is put through a series of tests. For example, locomotives and trains are run on an in-house track under different conditions at different speeds for no less than two hours. If a locomotive has a smoking feature or makes any sounds, they are also tested, regardless of whether or not there was anything wrong with these features.

“The reason we do that is we would like to see it break on our watch,” Hull said. “We don’t want to send the train to you and it break on you. What we found is usually within an hour everything that’s going to go wrong has.”

Emails are just as efficient as calling, if not more so. Customers can also access a slew of helpful resources under the “Customer Services” dropdown menu at www.Lionel.com.

Whether you are a longtime hobbyist or just starting out, rest assured that your train-related issues are in good hands, if you ever have to send your Lionel trains and / or ancillary items in for repair.

It's never fun when you need the help of customer support, but thankfulyl Lionel has a great facility and process to make it as painless and rewarding as possible.

15,000 Items Have Been Added to the DASH Catalog

Thanks to some hard work from our development team, we were able to add more than 15,000 new and vintage model trains to the DASH Catalog this week. That means more than 20,000 items have been added to the Catalog since DASH launched, bringing the total number of Catalog entries to more than 115,000 different trains and accessories!

If you're not familiar with the DASH Catalog, it's the ultimate resource for railroaders. It captures details, photos, and reference information for virtually every model train that's ever been created, allowing you to identify or track your collection in a unique and ridiculously convenient way, all for free!

You can use DASH's collection management features in conjunction with the Catalog to find, identify, and manage every single item in your collection. This allows you to create an "inventory" for insurance purposes or gain a sense of pride for those of us who love to see how amazing our collections are!

You can also view values for a majority of trains in the DASH Catalog with a DASH Premium membership. This helps you see what your collection is worth or determine a fair value for any upcoming purchases. And with an upgraded membership you can do all this and more from our mobile app!

This is a huge milestone for the DASH Catalog, and we hope you're able to enjoy browsing it as much as we've enjoyed building it.

Lionel Spotlights the Capitol Limited

If you're a fan of Lionel and the diverse history their products represent, you'll love the latest product spotlight from the storied manufacturer.

Anyone who runs Baltimore and Ohio will surely know the story of the Capitol Limited and its winding route across the east half of the country. Many have probably even ridden it in person and want to run its sleek passenger cars in their layout too! You can read all about the latest Lionel passenger cars and Capitol Limited sets straight from Lionel below.

The Capitol Limited

The Capitol Limited would be the B&O’s finest long-distance passenger train. Connecting New York and Chicago by way of Washington D.C., the Capitol was certainly not the fastest way between its two end points but it was among the most scenic and renowned for its services.
Ad

From its beginning in 1923 until 1926, the Capitol departed the Big Apple from Pennsylvania Station. When the Pennsylvania closed the doors to the Manhattan terminal, the B&O’s passengers transferred from train to bus in Jersey City. The buses were ferried to Manhattan and then made stops at numerous hotels.

From Jersey City to Philadelphia, the B&O relied on friendly connections with the Central of New Jersey and Reading. Once south of Philly, the train stayed on the B&O all the way to Union Station in Chicago.

Although it started as and remained a New York – Chicago train for most of its life, most of the Capitol’s business boarded at Washington. From here, the train offered an overnight trip, leaving just after the close of the business day and delivering refreshed travelers from their births at 8 the next morning.

The train was one of the first in the nation to receive air conditioned cars in 1931. The Capitol was then the first passenger train in the eastern United States to be streamlined and dieselized in 1938. The cash-strapped B&O rebuilt existing equipment.

By the 1950s, the train was receiving a new consist which included dome cars. Common out west, domes were rare east of Chicago due to tighter clearances. Despite the fact that the train passed through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery at night, the domes were quite popular. The B&O even added spotlights to the roof of the cars to help illuminate the rocks of the famous Cumberland Narrows as the train headed west at dusk.

At the west end of the line, connections were offered with other railroads, including through sleeper service with the Santa Fe all the way to Los Angeles.

By the end of the decade and through the 1960s, the train was losing patronage to air and automobile. The withdrawal of mail contracts in 1967 pretty much ended the glory years of the train. Amtrak at first dropped the route in 1971.

In 1981 Amtrak reopened the Capitol Limited, using the original B&O route from Washington to Pittsburgh, then over Conrail (now Norfolk Southern) to Chicago. (After 1958, the train never again reached New York but there were more than ample connections available via the Pennsy’s route.) The train included a dome car again in early years until it was modernized with Superliner cars (one of the few trains east of the Mississippi to use the high-level train.)

Lionel’s Models

Now you can recreate the B&O’s best. The 18″ aluminum passenger cars will look great behind our new E9s, or a variety of other motive power.

The new E8s include one powered and one non-powered locomotive. Both engines feature:

  • Fan-driven smoke unit with adjustable output
  • Directional lighting including LED headlights
  • Front ElectroCouplers
  • Working front Marker Lights
  • Illuminated number boards
  • Lighted and detailed cab interior

Powered locomotives also feature:

  • LEGACY Control – also capable of running on TMCC or Conventional
  • Odyssey II Speed Control
  • LEGACY RailSounds including
  • CrewTalk and TowerCom dialog
  • 6 Railroad speeds
  • 8 Diesel RPM levels
  • LEGACY Quilling horn
  • Single hit or continuous mechanical bell
  • Sequence control provides sounds and dialog for an entire trip around your layout
  • Current speed and fuel dialog and refueling sounds
  • Dual motors with flywheels
  • Refined Transformer Control with lower starting speeds
  • Traction Tires
  • Engineer and Fireman figures

Passenger cars feature:

  • Die-cast sprung metal trucks with operating couplers featuring hidden uncoupling tabs
  • Extruded aluminum bodies with flush-fitting windows
  • Operating end vestibules with flexible diaphragms
  • The Capitol’s blue and grey will look great on any layout.
  • Separately applied metal roof vents and grab irons
  • Interior lighting with on/off switch
  • Detailed interiors with passenger and crew figures
  • Operating marker and end lights on observation car
  • Lighted drumhead on observation car
  • Metal frame
  • Metal underframe details
  • O-54 minimum curve

The locomotives retail for $ 929.99 and the passenger car 4-packs for $ 639.99. See your dealers today; missing this train could have you feeling (royal) blue!

I'm a huge fan of the blue and gray color scheme of this train, as it provides a clean and professional look that will spruce up any layout or display case. The dome car is a lot of fun and adds some nice visual diversity to the line as well. Both these sets also feature all the expected bells and whistles, and a few extra touches you might not have been expecting.

If you're on the hunt for a beautiful set of fully-loaded passenger cars, these might be perfect for you. Keep an eye out on the DASH Marketplace for set or hit your local train shop to track them down.

Find Out What Your Model Train Collection is Worth

Model train collections are not only loads of fun, but they're also an investment in both time and money. Because they're such big investments, it's important to keep track of them and know exactly what they're worth. That's why a DASH collection report is perfect for any serious railroader.

Discover the Value of Your Collection

  • Add items to your collection and wanted list for them to show up on your report
  • DASH will associate real values with a vast majority of your trains
  • View online or print your report for convenience

Most folks spend thousands of dollars on their trains every year, while other devoted collectors have enormous collections or layouts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. These huge investments can quickly get out of hand without proper tracking, management, and reporting.

A free DASH membership provides access to our catalog and collection management tools, and that's the first step toward tracking a big collection. But collectors seeking more complex details, realistic past-sales values for trains, and more protection for their financial assets need more advanced tools.

They need a DASH Collection Report! DASH's collection reporting tools give collectors both a summary-level and itemized view of their enitre collection, whether it's 10 trains or 10,000. Not only does this provide a fun look into your collection's value, it also gives you a reliable record for collectibles insurance estimates and claims. Below is a glance at the summary level statistics in a DASH Collection Report.

You can see the overall value estimate of this collection falls between $ 17,000 and $ 20,000. Do you think yours is higher? You can also see that this railroader tracked the total cost of their collection as $ 12,000, so they've already gotten a $ 5,000 return on their investment! More than 95% of the items in this collection had an associated value in the DASH Catalog, which is typical for the average collection.

We're always working to add new values and improve the current ones too, and they're based on real sales data, so you know your collection's report will be as accurate and extensive as possible.

For collectors who want or need an itemized report of their entire collection on paper, we give you that option as well. You can use our quick and easy printing tool to create a paper version of your digital DASH collection. This gives you an extra level of protection and provides you with copies to submit for insurance estimates or claims if you need them. Between the security of DASH's cloud infrastructure and the paper copies locked away in your fireproof safe, you'll never lose your collection tracking records again!

DASH collection reports are for anyone who has always wanted to know how much their collection is worth out of pure curiousity. They're for anyone looking to sell their model train collection and ensure a fair price. DASH reports are perfect for someone who is buying collectibles insurance or filing a claim for lost trains.

In other words, DASH collection reports are a mandatory accessory for dedicated collectors like you. If you think a DASH collection report is perfect for your collection, just follow the simple instructions to the right and get started with the best collection management tools in the world.

You'll know exactly what your collection is worth in no time!

Railway Robbery: Treasure & Trolley

Everyone knows that collecting trains can get costly very quickly, but some model train collectibles are more expensive than anyone outside the hobby would ever expect. These kinds of exorbitant trains look more like "Railway Robbery" than a smart purchase, and here are a few of them.

I located five of the most ridiculous and excessive model train listings available on eBay right now. Although these trains aren't necessarily overpriced, they're definitely on the expensive side of the hobby and far pricier than the normal everyday railroader can handle. Welcome to another edition of Railway Robbery.

5. Lionel 1913 Midnight Blue 33 Set

Price: $ 15,000

This set features a 100 year old train that's absolutely stunning in every way. It might be a little rough around the edges, but what can you expect from such a unique vintage item? This would easily become the centerpiece of any collection, but I'm not sure many collectors would be willing to pay $ 15,000 to get it. Then again, that's not much for a piece of railroading history like this one.

4. Ives Early Boxed Trolley Set

Price: $ 16,000

This is a beautiful set, and you might never see another one like it! As incredible as the trolley itself looks, I suggest you click the above link and take a look at the box. It features marvelous vintage artwork that really captures the wonder of toy trains. But is it really worth $ 16,000 to the average collector!? Probably not.

3. Bockholt Bad IVH Gauge I Express Locomotive

Price: $ 18,500

There's nothing quite like a Bockholt train. This pure steel monster of a model may be one of the finest pieces in the entire world. It's totally handcrafted and full of an absurd number of otherwise unseen details. It's hard to look at this train and be anything but speechless. You'll stay speechless when you see the price!

2. HO Model Railroad (16 X19 feet) Professionally-Bulit

Price: $ 21,000

It would take far more than $ 21,000 to recreate this great layout, but who wants to adopt someone else's masterpiece when you can create your own?

1. Ives Treasure Chest

Price: $ 28,500

Ives makes its second appearance on this list with an absolutely stunning piece. This "layout in a box" treasure chest is supposedly the only one of its kind in the entire world, so there's no surprise it comes at a premium price. Collectibles simply don't get better than this, but one question looms: who has $ 28,500 to spend on it?

I doubt any of these incredible listings will sell in the near future, but they are awfully enjoyable to look at! Just be careful, because even if you can afford one of these pieces, you might become a victim of Railway Robbery! Anyone seeking more affordable ways to improve their collection should check out the DASH Marketplace instead.

Fans who have been anxiously awaiting the latest catalog from M.T.H. will be thrilled to know that it has now been posted online for your enjoyment.

Unlike traditional print catalogs, the new M.T.H. catalog is a digital-only version, but still looks and operates much like the paper versions to which you're probably much more accustomed. It might not have the 90,000 items of the DASH Catalog, but there are some beautiful new trains all the same. Take a look at a few previews of the catalog below, and be sure to click here to read it in full.

2013 RailKing One Gauge Catalog

Unlike past RailKing One Gauge catalogs or other M.T.H. product line catalogs, this year's One Gauge catalog will only be available in electronic format. No printed versions will be produced. The new catalog is presented on the M.T.H. website in an interactive flip page format. This new format allows you to page through the catalog as if you were turning the pages of the printed version. We've created hot links for all the items allowing you to quickly open up each item's detail page on the M.T.H. website where you'll discover more about each item, including item features, historical copy, sizes and minimum curve operation.
